7 Things That A New Leader Needs To Hear

Every small group system should have some sort of a first interview with a potential new leader. Here are 7 things that every new leader needs to hear:

  1. You are not alone. It is scary stepping out as a leader. Will anyone show up? I don’t feel qualified? What if someone asks a tough question? Cheese tray or a juicy fruit plate? The first thing that they need to know is that you will walk alongside them all the way. A solid coaching system can help a new leader feel better cared for.
  2. All you have to be is one step ahead. One of the biggest worries for potential leaders is not being worthy of leading other people. They don’t have to be Biblical scholars. They don’t have to have all of the answers. They just need to be striving to become more like Christ and be willing to take a few people along for the ride.
  3. We are not asking you to teach. A small group experience should be a shared learning environment. We tell our leaders that if you are talking more than 30% of the time, something is wrong. Their main focus during group time is facilitating the discussion. Let that awkward silence be your friend.
  4. You don’t have to be everyone’s bff. Most leaders will not be able to connect deeply to every person in their group. Nor should they try to. Facilitate (there’s that word again) opportunities for people in your group to connect with other group members. That usually happens best outside of the group time.
  5. Don’t have all of the answers. It is ok to not know what the common translation of the name ” Zephaniah” is (“Yahweh has hidden”…in case it comes up). Just tell them that you will get back with them next week with an answer.
  6. Pray weekly for your group members. A leader that prays is a leader that can be followed. Do not underestimate the power of prayer. As Bill Hybels says, we are too busy not to pray.
  7. How can I pray for you? Model number 6 with your leaders.
