What Diet Are Your Groups On?

zone-diet-1

When my wife and I decided to lose weight and get in shape last year, we started off with a slow carb diet that called for eggs and black beans every day. I will be honest, before starting this diet I was not a big fan of eggs and black beans. What I had not yet discovered was how creative you can get when you are desperate. I knew that the only way I was going to get healthy by lasting longer than 1 week on this diet was by coming up with a variety of ways to prepare eggs and black beans. You would be amazed at how many different ingredients you can add to eggs to make them taste good!

In the same way, our small groups are going to be the healthiest if they have a changing diet of curriculum. A healthy group will go through different seasons of growth where they need different types of studies. For instance:

  • A group that starts with message notes will probably need to move to a different discipline after a year or so.
  • It’s good for a Bible study group to move to a topical study for a semester.
  • A book study group should try a DVD study for 6 weeks.
  • A group that has only used DVD driven studies should work towards not relying always on someone else for content.

It’s good to revisit your menu of options every semester and make sure that groups are getting a balanced diet of studies. You can only eat scrambled eggs and black beans for so long.
